Helmut Smits: Rotterdam-based conceptual artist transforms everyday observations into visual twists

Helmut Smits, born in 1974 in Roosendaal, has been a resident and artist at the Rotterdam complex B.a.d. since 2012, where he emphasizes socially engaged visual concepts. After graduating from the Academy for Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1997, a transformative second-year project from Margriet Kemper liberated him from conventional artistic boundaries. His notable piece, 'The Real Thing' (2010-2017), transforms Coca-Cola into purified water. Recently, Smits has shifted to capturing and sharing everyday experiences through photography and film on Instagram. He fosters public involvement in art and has gained recognition from institutions such as the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Smits resides with his wife, Inèz Veldman, and their children, Bonnie and Abe.
