Hélène Delprat weaves missing scene of Bayeux Tapestry for 2026

French artist Hélène Delprat (born 1957) has been selected from 900 contestants to create the missing final scene of the Bayeux Tapestry, believed to depict William the Conqueror's coronation at Westminster Abbey on December 25, 1066. The work, titled "L'Ornement Comme Crime," is being woven by Atelier Tapisserie Guillot in Aubusson using low-warp technique, unlike the original embroidery. Measuring 4 by 6 meters (25 m²), it will be completed in two years. Delprat, represented by Galerie Christophe Gaillard and Hauser & Wirth, chose extrapolation over illustration or reconstruction, blending her pop, scholarly, and grotesque imagery with references to the original. The tapestry will be loaned to the British Museum from September 2026 to July 2027 for the millennium of William's birth, then travel to Westminster, Normandy, and Falaise before permanent installation at the renovated Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in October 2027. Delprat collaborated with a cartoonist and selected Guillot's workshop from samples. She designed a chest for transport and will have limited access to the work during weaving, as the low-warp loom shows only a small portion at a time.
