Hazel Yu's Thistle & Bloom Hotel Translates Thumbelina into Spatial Design

Designer Hazel Yu has conceived Thistle & Bloom, a conceptual boutique hotel that translates the narrative of Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina into an immersive hospitality environment. The project features a sunken lily-pad-inspired lobby, a cocktail bar referencing the underground tunnel, and a birdcage-like lounge inspired by the injured swallow episode. Winding corridors and concealed lounges create a sense of gradual discovery. The color palette of deep greens and purples draws from illustrated and cinematic versions of the tale. Guest rooms reference Thumbelina's walnut-shell bed with recessed bed elements and rounded corners. Yu developed the project through multiple studies to avoid literal representation, focusing instead on themes of desire, control, vulnerability, and concealment. The design was submitted to designboom's DIY submissions feature.
