Hayhurst and Co Inserts 7.8-Metre Void Into 1970s Hampstead Townhouse

architecture-design · 2026-09-26

Hampstead Town House, a five-storey residence in north London, has undergone a retrofit by Hayhurst and Co. Originally crafted in 1970 by Igal Yawetz and Howard Radley, the building's brick façade from that era has been maintained, featuring restored mortar and a new timber extension at the roof level. A striking 7.8-metre-high void connects the lower ground, ground, and first floors. The garage on the lower ground has been transformed into a double-height dining area, drawing inspiration from Adolf Loos' American Bar in Vienna. The design incorporates five unique staircases, cherry timber cladding, reclaimed parquet flooring, and bespoke furniture. Original window handles and tiles were repurposed, and new windows align with the original dimensions. The retrofit also includes an air-source heat pump and underfloor heating.
