Hauser & Wirth Zurich marks centenary of Alina Szapocznikow's birth with autobiographical exhibition

The Bahnhofstrasse gallery of Hauser & Wirth in Zurich is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Polish artist Alina Szapocznikow's birth with an exhibition entitled 'Alina Szapocznikow. Autobiography in Fragments.' This event coincides with a related exhibition at Galerie Loevenbruck in Paris. Together, these showcases present one piece from each year of Szapocznikow's artistic career, which lasted from the mid-1940s to the early 1970s. The exhibitions seek to highlight the profound expressive quality of her work, which transformed sculpture into a personal reflection of lived experiences. Born to a Jewish family in Poland in 1926, Szapocznikow endured internment in Nazi concentration camps as a teenager during the Holocaust.
