Hastings Contemporary and De La Warr Pavilion Present Summer Exhibitions

exhibition · 2026-07-20

Jude Montague reviews four exhibitions across two East Sussex venues. At Hastings Contemporary (13 June – 13 September 2026), Janaina Tschäpe's first major UK institutional solo show 'Conversations with the Sea' features abstract oil stick and watercolour works inspired by ocean surface movements, plus a 20-minute video piece 'He drowned in her eyes as she called him to follow' (2000). Miguel Rothschild's 'Undercurrents' presents expanded photography including 'From the Depths of the Sea' (2026), a fabric piece weighted with lead balls and suspended on fishing lines. Upstairs, 'Henry Moore / Lucian Freud: Monumental Intimate Truths' juxtaposes drawings by the two British artists, curated by director Kathleen Soriano around the theme of family; a 1983 photograph by Bruce Bernard shows Freud posing as a Moore. At De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea (27 June – 13 September 2026), 'To Improvise a Mountain: Lynette Yiadom-Boakye Curates' is a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition featuring Yiadom-Boakye's paintings alongside works by Walter Sickert, Lisa Brice, Édouard Vuillard, and Pierre Bonnard. The show includes a poem by Yiadom-Boakye referencing the Asante people. Curator João Conceição notes the gallery built a wall to block light for the display.
