HAS Design and Research wraps Bangkok streetlights in recyclable fabric canopy

Bangkok City Hall Square in Phra Nakhon district now hosts 'High Line Bangkok', a temporary public installation by HAS Design and Research. Architects Jenchieh Hung and Kulthida Songkittipakdee repurposed existing streetlight poles as structural supports, weaving over 100 meters of recyclable Thai fabric into curved, tubular forms that connect poles and trees. By day, the colored fabric filters sunlight, creating shifting patterns of shade. At night, it diffuses artificial light, transforming into a luminous element. The design references the adjacent Wat Suthat Thepwararam temple's roof profile and traditional fish-scale tiles. The 13,800 sqm site at Lan Khon Mueang Town Square, opposite Bangkok Metropolitan Administration headquarters, responds to tropical climatic conditions where people seek shade during heat and light after dark. The project proposes a model for adapting urban infrastructure into active public space without permanent construction.
