Hannah Murray: Sea Monster at Umbrella Studio

exhibition · 2026-07-08

Cairns-based artist Hannah Murray presents 'Sea Monster' at Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts in Queensland, running from June 12 to July 26, 2026. The exhibition reimagines North Queensland's tropical environment and Great Barrier Reef encounters, transforming reef fish, shells, orchids, and other flora and fauna into 'mythical sea treasures' as surreal, symbolic presences. Murray works across drawing, painting, fabric, and product design. Her engagement with Spanish artist Maruja Mallo (1902–95), a member of Salvador Dalí's Surrealist circle, informs the works. The exhibition includes 'The jokers and the thief' (2026, acrylic on board, 40 × 40cm), photographed by Michael Marzik.
