Hakanto Contemporary to Host Major Pierrot Men Retrospective 'Fofon'Aina' in 2026

Hakanto Contemporary in Ankadimbahoaka, Madagascar, will dedicate its next season to Malagasy photographer Pierrot Men with the exhibition 'Fofon'Aina' ('Souffle de vie'), running from July 4, 2026, to February 2027. The retrospective, curated by Joël Andrianomearisoa and Rina Ralay Ranaivo, spans 2,000 square meters and marks the first large-scale retrospective for the artist. Born in 1954 and based in Fianarantsoa, Men began his artistic journey in painting before turning to photography, which became his primary medium. His black-and-white work captures everyday life across Madagascar, focusing on human emotions and dignity. Men received the Grand Prix Leica in 1995, was nominated for the Prix de la Fondation Louis Roederer in 2021, and for the Prix James Barnor in 2023. The exhibition traces his career from painting to his iconic photographs, with testimonies from Jean-Yves Chen, Pablo Men, and Léon Fulgence. Men's work is considered a living memory of Madagascar, contributing to the global recognition of Malagasy photography.
