Habsburg Masterpieces from Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna Debut in Rome

The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna has declared 2026 the "Year of Italy," launching a series of cultural initiatives between Austria and Italy. The flagship event is the exhibition "Da Vienna a Roma. Capolavori degli Asburgo dal Kunsthistorisches Museum" at Palazzo Cipolla's Museo del Corso in Rome, curated by Cäcilia Bischoff. Over fifty works from the Habsburg imperial collections, spanning the late Renaissance to Baroque, are shown in Italy for the first time. Artists include Titian, Rubens, Caravaggio, Velázquez, Tintoretto, and Van Dyck. A section features artifacts from the museum's Kunstkammer. The introductory hall contrasts Palazzo Cipolla, designed by Antonio Cipolla as the Cassa di Risparmio di Roma, with the Kunsthistorisches Museum building by Gottfried Semper and Carl Hasenauer, commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph and opened in 1891. KHM director Jonathan Fine's catalog essay emphasizes shared European cultural heritage and art's unifying role. A highlight is Giuseppe Arcimboldo's allegory "Winter" (1563). The exhibition runs until July 5, 2026.
