Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I: A Masterpiece of the Vienna Secession

Between 1904 and 1907, Gustav Klimt created Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, a masterpiece that exemplifies his Golden Phase, influenced by Byzantine gold mosaics found in Ravenna. The artwork presents a lifelike depiction of Adele Bloch-Bauer set against an ornate, abstract background adorned with gold leaf and relief elements. Adele, a notable Jewish socialite, was known for hosting a salon that championed Austrian artists. Commissioned by her spouse Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, the painting was kept privately in their Vienna home. Following Adele's passing in 1925, Ferdinand held onto it until the Nazis occupied Austria in 1938, leading to its confiscation. For six decades, it was showcased at the Belvedere Gallery, earning the nickname 'Austrian Mona Lisa.' In 2000, Maria Altmann, Ferdinand's niece, initiated a lawsuit against Austria under the 1998 Art Restitution Law, culminating in the pivotal Republic of Austria v. Altmann case, which she won, resulting in the painting's return to the Bloch-Bauer family. In 2006, Altmann sold the artwork for a record-breaking $135 million. It is currently permanently exhibited at the Neue Galerie in New York City. The narrative inspired a 2015 film and underscores ongoing efforts to repatriate art looted by the Nazis.
