Gustav Klimt's Depiction of Women: Eroticism, Ornament, and Myth

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), a leading figure of the Vienna Secession, made women the central subjects of his paintings and drawings. His oeuvre includes portraits, mythological scenes, and erotic nudes, often featuring lavish ornamentation and gold leaf during his Golden Phase (1901-1909). Klimt's portrayal of women was influenced by the changing social roles of women in early 20th-century Vienna, including the suffrage movement. He broke conventions by depicting pubic hair in 'Nuda Veritas' (1889) and a nude pregnant woman in 'Hope I' (1903). His mythological works, such as 'Judith I' (1901), 'Pallas Athena' (1898), and 'Water Serpents' (1904-07), present women as powerful, sexual, and sometimes same-sex intimate figures. Klimt's 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I' (1907) exemplifies his Golden Style, where the sitter is nearly submerged in gold ornament, leading to feminist critiques that he reduced women to aesthetic objects. Despite never marrying, Klimt was rumored to have fathered fourteen children and had intimate relationships with models. His works are held in major collections including the Belvedere Museum Vienna, Neue Galerie New York, National Gallery of Canada Ottawa, and Wien Museum.
