Guarujá opens Brazil's first saltwater underwater museum

Brazil's first saltwater underwater museum has opened at Praia de Guaiúba in Guarujá, São Paulo state. The museum features 15 sculptures by artist Adélio Sarro, installed 8.5 meters deep, with pieces up to 2.45 meters tall and weighing over three tons. The works honor local maritime culture and figures such as Candido Portinari, Santos Dumont, poet Oswaldo de Camargo, and engineer Fernando Lee, alongside fishermen, sailors, surfers, mermaids, indigenous people, and stevedores. The project was developed by the São Paulo State Secretariat of Tourism and Travel in partnership with the Guarujá city government. Accessible to divers, boat visitors, and kayakers, the museum aims to blend art with coastal biodiversity. Sarro, who has created over 2,200 sculptures and 300 public monuments, produced the pieces with his team over about a month after technical studies. His work is also preserved at the Memorial Adélio Sarro in Vinhedo, one of Brazil's largest private artist museums.
