Guardian's Week in Wildlife: Bukang-i the Shark Returns to Busan Canal After Release
Bukang-i, a female dusky shark, slipped beneath a net during the night and swam back into a port canal in Busan, South Korea, after repeated efforts had finally steered her toward open water. The mayor has granted her the official title of "shafluencer," though observers now worry about her health. Elsewhere, a black bear toured a library in Mammoth Lakes, California, reportedly sampling new releases, snacks and a jar of honey; an education department spokesperson joked that the "Li-BEAR-ian" was hunting a copy of Winnie-the-Pooh, published 100 years ago that day. John Oliver Dum placed second in the Nikon Small World photomicrography contest with a closeup of a pollen-dusted jumping spider. About 140 Exmoor ponies of the Anchor herd were rounded up in Exmoor national park, Somerset, for hoof, microchip and health checks. Ollie, a spike-less hedgehog with ringworm and a bacterial infection, receives medicine, pain relief and what a veterinary surgeon called "lots of spa treatments" at Prickles in a Pickle in Stoke Fleming, Devon. Customs officers in Cologne refused entry to a traveler from Mexico City carrying 55 lizards and 37 live venomous snakes in shampoo bottles, plastic containers and socks. Chilean devil rays, the deepest-diving ray species, surfaced off Santa Catalina Island, California.
