Ground Breaks on $7B 1901 Project Around Chicago's United Center

On June 3, 2026, the proprietors of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks initiated the $7 billion 1901 Project, which encompasses a 55-acre area surrounding the United Center. The first phase, estimated at $500 million, features a 6,000-seat concert venue, a hotel with 180 rooms, retail outlets, and parking facilities, with an expected completion date in 2028. The overall development plan includes up to 9,463 residential units, with 20% designated as affordable, to be addressed in subsequent phases. In May, the City Council granted a $54.7 million Cook County Class 7(b) tax incentive, marking the initial public funding. Community meetings highlighted worries regarding gentrification and representation. The City Council gave unanimous approval for the project in February 2025.
