Grip Face's 'Utopía del Lodo' Installation Opens at Fundació Miró Mallorca

Last September, at the Fundació Miró Mallorca in Palma, David Oliver, also known as Grip Face, unveiled his most provocative installation yet, titled 'Utopía del Lodo, Sashimi de Bruma' (Utopia of Mud and Sashimi of Mist). This piece occupies the Espai Cúbic, showcasing twelve suspended sculptures—some furry and others sleek—attached to thorn swings. These sculptures are arranged in a circular formation reminiscent of the stars on the European Union flag, all facing away from the audience. Inspired by an image of a lone swing in a bombed playground from the Ukraine conflict, the installation delves into themes of lost innocence, societal decline, and digital anxiety. Born in Palma in 1989 and now residing in Madrid, Oliver began as a skateboard grip tape artist, adopting the name 'Grip Face.' His works blend humor with social commentary, influenced by graffiti, punk graphics, and Japanese animation. Notable series include 'Black Faces' (2014), which addresses the Syrian migrant crisis, and 'Doors Without a Destination' (2016), which revitalizes abandoned doorways. Recent projects like 'Network Mirror' (2023) and 'De máscara a placebo insomne' (2024) focus on social media overexposure and digital anxiety. Oliver's artistic approach incorporates masks, mirrors, and hair to investigate the conflict between virtual identities and the tangible world.
