Grimshaw Completes Three Auckland City Rail Link Stations Rooted in Māori Narratives
Grimshaw has finalized three stations in Auckland's city center for the City Rail Link: Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-Hape, and Maungawhau, which is New Zealand's most extensive transport infrastructure initiative. Collaborating with Mana Whenua, this project effectively doubles the rail network capacity of the city and adheres to the Te Aranga Māori Design Principles. The design reflects the Māori creation narrative, Te Whaiao, through four key elements—Sky, Earth, Threshold, and Fourth—utilizing layered materials. Each station showcases distinct artworks, such as Graham Tipene's installation at Te Waihorotiu and Reuben Kirkwood's sculptures at Karanga-a-Hape. Mark Middleton from Grimshaw remarked that this infrastructure will revolutionize movement in Auckland and bolster cultural identity. Peter Bennetts provided the photography. Additionally, Grimshaw revealed plans for the entry plaza at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
