Gregory Logan Dunn's Artistic Evolution and Abstract Painting Practice

Gregory Logan Dunn, born in 1968 in Upland, California and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, developed his artistic foundation through early exposure to Washington, D.C. area museums including the Smithsonian, National Gallery of Art, and Hirshhorn Museum. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in Studio Art from Montgomery College in 1996 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1998, transitioning from sculpture to painting as his primary medium. Professionally, Dunn worked at The Phillips Collection and National Museum of African Art while establishing himself as an art appraiser. His exhibition history includes solo shows in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and New York City, with group exhibitions extending to Miami, London, Italy, Spain, Monaco, and representation through Yudian Art Gallery in Hangzhou, China. In 2024, he received the Future Global Masterpiece of Art Award from Contemporary Art Curator Magazine and the Persona Art Honor from Contemporary Art Station. He completed a studio residency at Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia from 2022 to 2023, and established a new studio in Ruther Glen, Virginia in 2025. Dunn's painting process involves applying initial color layers across the canvas, then building surfaces using a plexiglass tool adapted from Gerhard Richter's technique, creating textured works that reveal their construction history. His abstract paintings explore psychological states, spiritual inquiry, and contemporary issues through color, texture, and movement. In 2023, he publicly disclosed his Bipolar Disorder 1 diagnosis during Mental Health Awareness Month, integrating this transparency into his artistic practice and public engagement.
