Greenhouse Prototype 2: Climate Device Debuts at NYBG Conservatory

At the New York Botanical Garden's Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a new exhibit has been unveiled by Syracuse University architecture professors Hermine Demaël and Stephen Zimmerer. Named Greenhouse Prototype 2, this lightweight mobile structure functions as a 'climate device,' fostering a unique micro-environment for plants through shade, passive airflow, and misting pumps. Constructed from an existing aluminum greenhouse frame, it features perforated aluminum screens that mirror the glass roof. The device's illustrations were inspired by Dr. Douglas Daly, a curator specializing in Amazonian botany at NYBG, and developed in collaboration with in-house scientists. This installation will be displayed until October 5, 2026, as part of the year-long research initiative Evolving with Plants, backed by The Architectural League of New York and the New York State Council on the Arts. Additionally, Weiss/Manfredi is revamping NYBG's museum complex and Mosholu entrance.
