Grand Rapids Art Museum Presents Three Solo Shows on Incarceration and Creativity
Opening on October 3, 2026, the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Michigan will present three solo exhibitions featuring artists Julie Green, Gary Tyler, and Ray Materson. Curated by Terra Warren and Jennifer Wcisel, these exhibitions focus on the humanity of those who are incarcerated. Green's work, The Last Supper, consists of nearly 1,000 painted ceramic plates representing last meal requests from death row inmates and will be on display until October 24, 2027. Tyler, who was wrongfully convicted at 16 in 1974, created quilts for dying inmates during his 40 years in prison; his exhibition, Rebirth, is available until January 3, 2027. Materson, an outsider embroidery artist, developed his unique technique while serving seven years, with his show, Metamorphosis, also running until January 3, 2027.
