Gran Hotel Margalida Opens in Banyalbufar, Mallorca, with Interiors by Virginia Nieto

architecture-design · 2026-09-24

Spanish hospitality group Annua Signature Hotels has opened Gran Hotel Margalida in Banyalbufar, a cliffside town on Mallorca's Tramuntana coast. The 29-key property is the company's second on the island, joining existing inns in Menorca and Lanzarote. Interiors by Virginia Nieto use yellow throughout, from bathroom tiles to parasols, with palm-tree wall murals and oversized shaggy light fittings sourced from Yucatán. The building, designed by architects Álvaro Onieva and MR Studio, is long and narrow due to the steep topography, with multiple levels that can be disorienting; Monocle reported losing its way to its room and briefly misplacing the gym. Rooms, pool and a dining terrace overlook the Mediterranean, where yachts pass at dusk and locals descend to a swimming spot. The hotel includes an oyster bar and a soundtrack of cover versions that Monocle found too loud. Monocle noted that the storytelling feels overly evident and that it remains to be seen whether local residents will use the oyster bar. The review praised the views, team and pool, and described leaving via the winding Tramuntana mountain road as departing a haven. The hotel's website is annuahotels.com. Banyalbufar was first settled by Moors in the 10th century, and its stone terraces still hold the town above the sea; the area has drawn architects, fashion figures and Danish bankers as residents.
