González and Gómez Unveil 'Espejo del mundo' at Museo Helga de Alvear
The artist duo María Jesús González and Patricia Gómez present their first institutional exhibition, 'Espejo del mundo', at the Museo Helga de Alvear in Cáceres, running from June 12 to October 11, 2026. Curated by María Jesús Ávila, the show will travel to TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes in 2027. The project, initiated in 2017, focuses on the former Psychiatric Hospital of Valencia (now Hospital de Salud Mental de Bétera), active from 1973 to the mid-1980s. The artists extracted wall fragments from the abandoned wards, photographed rooms via mirrors found on site, and assembled installations that evoke the daily life and confinement of patients. The title references Maria Clementina Pereira Cunha's essay 'O espelho do mundo' and Michel Foucault's analysis of Erasmus's 'In Praise of Folly'. The exhibition also includes mural extractions from the old prison of Cáceres, transforming them into archaeological and poetic records. González and Gómez have worked for over fifteen years rescuing memory from abandoned spaces, previously presenting 'Casa Ena' (2018) and winning the Inéditos award at La Casa Encendida that same year.
