Gon Architects transforms narrow Madrid attic with pop colors and diagonal layout

architecture-design · 2026-06-18

Madrid-based studio gon architects has renovated Casa JAM, a narrow attic apartment in the Argüelles neighborhood of Madrid, using a bold diagonal axis and four chromatic volumes to replace traditional partitions. The 18-meter-long, 3.5-meter-wide space was originally a dark corridor apartment in a 19th-century building. The design eliminates the hallway and introduces a sequence of material blocks: a Klein blue box at the entrance hides the main bathroom; oak wood and fluted glass sliding panels separate the bedroom and dressing area; an olive green tiled volume encloses the shower; and a pastel yellow kitchen opens onto the living-dining area. Original riveted steel columns are painted cobalt blue. Full-height mirrors amplify natural light, and large folding windows connect the interior to a 12-square-meter terrace with continuous light gray flooring. Custom blue storage runs along the living area. The project was photographed by Imagen Subliminal.
