GOMA Opens World-First Jim Henson Exhibition with 70 Years of Puppetry

exhibition · 2026-09-07

In September, the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane unveiled "Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company," marking the first exhibition to celebrate 70 years of the company's legacy. Running until 18 April 2027, this showcase is curated by Amanda Slack-Smith, Karen Falk, and Nicole Goldman, and is divided into three sections: 'The Method, the Making and the Magic,' 'The Puppets, the Puppeteers and the Performance,' and 'The Daring, the Digital and New Directions.' Notable exhibits include characters from Sesame Street, sets from Fraggle Rock, and David Bowie's costume from Labyrinth. The exhibition also highlights Muppet craftsmanship, featuring Don Sahlin's contributions and Kermit's history. Jane Henson owned 40% of the company and founded initiatives to promote puppetry education.
