Goldsworthy and Holzer Win Praemium Imperiale

The Japan Art Association has announced the 2026 Praemium Imperiale laureates, with Andy Goldsworthy and Jenny Holzer among the honorees. Goldsworthy, recognized for his land art and ephemeral installations, received the sculpture prize, while Holzer, known for her text-based works critiquing capitalism, was awarded in the painting category. Architect Daniel Libeskind will travel to Tokyo for the ceremony, actress Cate Blanchett was honored for theatre and film, and conductor Herbert Blomstedt won in music. The French organization La Source Garouste received the Grant for Young Artists, worth 5 million yen. Established in 1988 and named after the late Prince Takamatsu, the prize includes a gold medal and 15 million yen (approximately £70,000) per recipient. Nomination committees, chaired by international advisors including Lamberto Dini, Lord Patten of Barnes, Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, and Hillary Clinton, select winners across five disciplines. Fujisankei serves as the main underwriter of the awards.
