Glenn Brown's Brown Collection Opens 'Fail We May, Sail We Must' in Marylebone

exhibition · 2026-09-24

The Brown Collection in Marylebone, London, presents 'Fail We May, Sail We Must' from 25 September 2026 to 7 August 2027. Founded by British artist Glenn Brown, a Turner Prize nominee in 2000, the gallery opened in 2022 and is free to visit. Housed in a four-floor mews house on Bentinck Mews, near the Wallace Collection, it displays Brown's personal art collection alongside his own works. The exhibition's title encourages boundary-pushing and experimentation. The eclectic hang juxtaposes historical and contemporary pieces: Salvador Dalí's risqué sketches, George Romney's 'Portrait of Pamela, later Lady Fitzgerald', Henry Raeburn's 'Portrait of Mrs William MacKenzie', Nicolaes Maes's portraits, Dado's cartoonesque works, and John Stezaker's photo montages. Brown's upside-down portrait 'Searched Hard for You and Your Special Ways' (1995) signals the irreverent approach. Other highlights include Ann-Marie James's 'Musee Imaginaire, Plate 172' (2013), Jacques Villon's 'Little Girl's Head' (1929), and 'Venus and her Hand-maidens' (Circle of Claudio Francesco Beaumont, 1694-1766). The domestic atmosphere features Michael Graves chairs and an Eduardo Paolozzi table lamp. Co-founder Edgar Laguinia, Brown's husband, notes that the anonymous painting 'Two figures walking on a country lane' previously hung in their hallway. The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10.30 am to 6 pm, and offers an events programme.
