Giuliana Cunéaz's AI Rituals at Rifugio Digitale in Florence

Giuliana Cunéaz presents 'Invisible Matter. Nahuales, Spirits and Augmented Presences' at Rifugio Digitale in Florence from June 4 to June 20, 2026. The solo exhibition features fifteen AI-generated videos created specifically for the venue at via della Fornace 41. Curated by Serena Tabacchi and Rebecca Pedrazzi, with artistic direction by Laura Andreini, the show explores AI as a tool for evocation rather than display. Cunéaz focuses on the threshold where figures emerge, lose stability, and transform into presences. The title references invisible matter that precedes form, inhabits nature before translation into image, and resurfaces as figures, spirits, animals, or energy. The exhibition centers on two themes: Nahuales from Maya tradition—animal guide figures tied to individual destiny and the human-nonhuman continuum—and Spirits, more anthropomorphic liminal creatures in transformation. Cunéaz treats these references without reducing them to narrative or symbolism; they appear as open, unstable images rising from psychic and natural depths. The videos retain the uncertain quality of early generative AI explorations, embracing glitches, anomalies, and indeterminacy as poetic possibilities. The artist engages AI as a shared territory between human sensibility and generative unpredictability, producing images that belong simultaneously to the technological present and an archaic memory of vision.
