Girmachew Getnet's 'Circle – Humans' at KVFM Kunstverein Familie Montez, Frankfurt

Ethiopian artist Girmachew Getnet presents his first solo exhibition of exclusively large-format abstract paintings, titled 'Circle – Humans / I Am Because We Are', at KVFM Kunstverein Familie Montez in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, from 17 September to 18 October 2026. The exhibition juxtaposes his figurative works with new abstract pieces, unified by the theme of human unity and equality. Getnet explains that the circle symbolizes a '360-degree view' of humanity, eliminating hierarchies and fostering authentic communication. The concept draws from the African philosophy of Ubuntu, meaning 'I am because we are'. In an interview with Galyna Gubriienko, an art curator student from Ukraine, Getnet discusses his artistic evolution, noting that his earlier works were figurative, and this exhibition marks his first foray into large-format abstraction. He describes his creative process as spontaneous and instinctual, with no hidden motifs, and states that his artworks are never truly finished, as he continually adds layers. Getnet, who is from Ethiopia but has lived in Frankfurt for many years, credits the city's multicultural environment for inspiring his daily work.
