Giovanni Segantini: Alpine Divisionist Painter Dies at 41

Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899), an Italian painter associated with Italian Divisionism, died of acute peritonitis at age 41. His technique involved dividing brushstrokes into 'filaments' to enhance chromatic luminosity, distinct from French Pointillism. Segantini's childhood was marked by tragedy: his mother died when he was seven, his father abandoned him, and he later ran away from home. A priest discovered his drawing talent and supported his early sketches. At 21, he met Luigia Pierina Bugatti (known as 'Buci'), but could not marry her due to lacking citizenship—born in Trentino under Austro-Hungarian rule, he held neither Austrian nor Italian documents. Despite community condemnation, they stayed together. Pursued by creditors, he moved to Switzerland's Engadin Valley, where he painted en plein air, focusing on alpine landscapes. He built a mobile studio high in the mountains to work on large canvases overnight. The cold and intense work pace worsened his health; he suffered an attack while painting and died two weeks later. His works include 'Mountain Landscape' (1898, private collection), 'Return from the Woods' (1890, Segantini Museum, Saint Moritz), 'The Punishment of Lust' (1891, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool), and 'Death' (1898-1899, Segantini Museum).
