Giovanni Brancaccio Retrospective at Fondazione Serena Messanelli Zweig, Capri

A major retrospective of Giovanni Brancaccio (1903–1975) opens June 22, 2026 at the Fondazione Serena Messanelli Zweig in Capri, running until July 20, 2026. Curated by Bruno Flavio and Massimo Esposito, the exhibition spans paintings, engravings, drawings, and sculptures, covering the full arc of Brancaccio's career as a key figure in 20th-century Neapolitan painting. Central to the narrative is Capri, which shaped the artist's vision after he first encountered the island in 1930. Works depict Faraglioni, terraces, white rocks, sea, and light, evolving from a 1930s equilibrium through an expressionist turn during the war to a freer, more material postwar phase blending Neapolitan figurative tradition with Baroque and Pompeian influences. An unpublished text by his niece Luisa Brancaccio recalls the artist's response to friends asking what he did on Capri: 'I look.' The exhibition is part of the foundation's program rediscovering artists linked to Capri.
