Giorgio Morandi: The Poet of Still Life and Meditative Aesthetics

Giorgio Morandi, born in Bologna on July 20, 1890, spent most of his life in his hometown and Grizzana (renamed Grizzana Morandi in 1985). He studied at the Accademia di Bologna from 1907 to 1913. After his father's death in 1909, he moved with his mother and three sisters to Via Fondazza 36. A trip to Florence exposed him to Giotto, Masaccio, Piero Della Francesca, and Paolo Uccello. His first solo exhibition in 1914 already showed his signature style: reduced color harmonies and everyday objects arranged in near-Cézannian simplification. Between 1918 and 1919 he exhibited with the Futurists, and in 1920 he embraced the ideas of Valori plastici. He taught at the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Bologna from 1930 to 1956. Morandi died in Bologna on June 18, 1964, and is buried at the Certosa di Bologna. His work synthesizes Chardin's realism with Cézanne's formal simplification, focusing on bottles, vases, and Grizzana landscapes stripped of excess realism.
