Gillian Ayres Retrospective 'A Life in Colour' Opens at The Box in Plymouth

A major retrospective of Gillian Ayres, titled 'A Life in Colour,' has opened at The Box in Plymouth, which recently won the Art Fund Museum of the Year award. The exhibition spans seven decades of the artist's work, from a landscape painted in her teens to murals from the 1950s and vibrant later pieces created in her north Devon studio. Ayres, who died in 2018 at age 88, was known for her fearless commitment to painting and her use of intense color. Curator Hannah Hooks describes the show as a chance to champion the power of imagination and to re-examine one of Britain's most radical female artists. The exhibition runs until October 4.
