Gilad Ophir: Post-Photographic Matrices of Light and Matter

Gilad Ophir, a former senior lecturer in photography and art with a 37-year career, now focuses on his studio practice, creating archival pigment prints that explore post-photography, material abstraction, and perception. His works, such as "Untitled (Matrix Y 2026)" and "Untitled (Matrix 17526A-5)" (50 x 75cm each), are produced without a traditional camera; instead, he manipulates materials and substrates through close-range digital systems and controlled mechanical light. Ophir studied semiotics at the New School for Social Research, fine arts in New York, and earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from Hunter College. His images are presented as serialized matrices with numerical classifications rather than literary titles, encouraging direct engagement with visual qualities. The prints oscillate between cosmic landscapes and intricate structures, turning the gaze back toward the viewer's perception. Ophir's goal is to explore the threshold of visibility and the limits of the medium, presenting images as autonomous physical facts rather than windows to a pre-existing world.
