Gideon Tsang's 'Because We Fall' Series Explores Grief Through Blurred Floral Photography

Gideon Tsang, a Chinese-Canadian fine art photographer based in Austin, Texas, has created a new series titled 'Because We Fall.' The project consists of large-scale, painterly photographs that focus on flowers, intentionally blurred and distorted to represent impermanence and grief. The series originated from Tsang's experience at his father's funeral in 2024, where he reflected on how a tombstone's hyphen symbolized a compressed lifetime. The title references a Japanese death poem, 'Flowers are flowers because they fall,' highlighting the concept that beauty exists due to transience. Tsang uses a Sony RX100 VII camera to achieve a flattened, painterly effect, embracing blur and motion to capture time's passage rather than freezing moments. The works are printed on matte archival paper to reduce sheen and limit reproducibility. Tsang, who founded Austin art spaces Space 12 and Vesper, explains that the series resists photography's traditional role of preservation, instead emphasizing change and ephemerality. He connects the imagery to Zen Buddhist traditions of jisei (death poems), suggesting that identity is found in fleeting moments. The project was featured in an online publication in March 2026, with Tsang discussing his artistic approach to memory, loss, and the non-neutrality of photographic representation.
