Ghada Amer's garden-sculpture 'Esto nos salvará' opens in Bilbao

On June 11, 2026, Ana Serratosa Gallery & Art Spaces will inaugurate 'ESTO NOS SALVARÁ', a site-specific installation by Egyptian-born artist Ghada Amer at Parque de la República de Abando in Bilbao, adjacent to the Guggenheim Museum. Curated by Pedro Medina, the work is a garden-sculpture made of corten steel letters spelling the installation's title, each containing native Basque vegetable varieties. The piece aims to provoke critical reflection on sustainability and healthy eating, functioning as a political action to engage the community. Amer has integrated gardens into her practice since 1997, gaining international recognition at the 1999 Venice Biennale curated by Harald Szeemann, where she won the UNESCO prize, and again at the 2005 Venice Biennale. The installation includes an educational program for schools and social groups, and a tapas route with twenty local bars and restaurants using organic vegetables, supported by Guía Macarfi. Collaborators include Bilbao City Council, AndBank, Gimetal, Primafrío, and Promociones Loiola. The work was first presented in Valencia in 2023 ahead of its designation as European Green Capital 2024, and has been adapted for Bilbao. Amer will open a solo exhibition at Es Baluard Museum in Palma de Mallorca in September 2026. The installation runs until July 10, 2026.
