Gestures of Horizon: Sound Installation Inspired by Maria Reiche

A performative sound installation titled "Gestures of Horizon" places the life and work of German mathematician and Nazca Lines researcher Maria Reiche (1903–1998) at its center. Conceived by composer Hang Su and scenographer Nina DeLudemann, the piece is performed by MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle musik with musicians Paul Hübner, Sabrina Ma, and Caleb Salgado. The installation uses 486 meters of white folding rulers to mark the elevation difference between Berlin and Nazca, transforming them into structures evoking geoglyphs and textile waste mountains. Performers create an immersive landscape on a sandpaper stage using specially developed sound objects. Costumes and blankets are made from recycled textiles from waste mountains. Photographs, notes, and drawings from Reiche's archive are translated into sound, movement, and spatial structures. The work invites visitors to reflect on how human activity shapes landscapes, linking Reiche's observations with contemporary global interconnections.
