German painter Paula Kamps dies at 36

German painter Paula Kamps has died at age 36, as announced by her Paris gallery Sans titre. No cause of death was given. Born in Cologne in 1990, she lived in Chicago. She studied philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin before transferring to Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she was a master student of Tomma Abts and Elizabeth Peyton. Her work oscillated between figuration and abstraction, using glazes, watercolor, and drawing to create fragile worlds centered on memory, transience, and perception. Painter André Butzer described her fluid color forms as "stains." She also published poetry and artist books. Since 2021 represented by Galerie Sans titre, her solo and group exhibitions took place in Chicago, Hong Kong, Milan, Berlin, and Zurich. Earlier this year, she had a solo show at Galerie Christine Mayer. The gallery praised her as an "artist of rare sensitivity."
