German Carnival Artist Receives Prison Sentence in Russia for Satirical Putin Displays

German sculptor and illustrator Jacques Tilly has been sentenced to 8.5 years in prison by a Moscow court for creating carnival floats that mocked Russian President Vladimir Putin. The 62-year-old artist was convicted on charges of disseminating false information about the Russian military and offending religious sentiments. Tilly, who has designed floats for Düsseldorf's Carnival parade for nearly four decades, created displays including one showing Putin in a blood-filled bathtub colored like the Ukrainian flag and another with him biting a map of Ukraine. The sentencing was conducted in absentia since Tilly resides in Germany. In response, he criticized the trial as propaganda from an authoritarian regime, stating it attacks freedoms of opinion, press, and satire. Tilly is known for politically charged carnival art, having previously targeted figures like Dominic Cummings during Brexit protests, Donald Trump, Angela Merkel, and Theresa May. His work typically takes about two weeks to design and construct. The case highlights tensions over artistic expression and political satire in international contexts.
