Gerard Malanga's 1960s–70s New York Photographs Return to Galerie du Jour agnès b.
Galerie du Jour agnès b. rehangs photographs by Gerard Malanga depicting New York in the 1960s and 1970s, drawn from the Bel Œil collection and shown more than twenty years after "Bande à part." Malanga was twenty years old when the poet Charles Henri Ford introduced him to Andy Warhol; he joined the Factory and stayed closely attached to it, working as assistant, poet, filmmaker and dancer, performing on stage with the Velvet Underground while keeping a camera with him at all times. His stated motive was personal: he photographed people because they were his friends, because he loved them, because they were there. Among the subjects are Edie Sedgwick pulling faces in a photobooth, Warhol with his media toys, Patti Smith crossing the 68th Street subway station, William Burroughs standing in front of the Burroughs Corporation headquarters, Iggy Pop undressing, Dennis Hopper waiting between two films, and Mick Jagger reduced to his lips. The images do not aim to manufacture icons; they draw people close, leaving behind the myths a small community that did not yet know it would enter history. The gallery now occupies the first floor of La Fab., on a square named after Jean-Michel Basquiat. The exhibition runs from 4 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 at Place Jean-Michel Basquiat, 75013 Paris, near Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand station, open Wednesday to Saturday 11am–7pm and Sunday 2pm–7pm, with free entry.
