Georges Kars, Forgotten Painter of the École de Paris, Gets First Paris Retrospective at mahJ
The musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme (mahJ) in Paris is showcasing the inaugural retrospective of Georges Kars (1880-1945) since his passing, displaying 150 pieces from the National Gallery in Prague. Curated by Pascale Samuel and Anna Pravdova, this exhibition chronicles Kars's journey from his birth as Jiri Karpeles in Prague to his demise in Geneva following his experiences in WWII camps. After studying under Franz von Stuck in Munich, Kars relocated to Paris in 1908, where he interacted with avant-garde artists. His artistic range includes expressionism and cubism, featuring significant portraits. In 1942, he escaped France and was later detained in Switzerland, where he ultimately took his own life. Since 1945, only one solo exhibition has taken place, in Troyes in 1983.
