Gensler unveils landscape-first tourism masterplan for Vang Vieng, Laos
Gensler, a global design firm, has introduced a conceptual masterplan for a 522-hectare tourism hub in Vang Vieng, Laos, focusing on ecological systems and landscape rather than typical resort development. Situated between the villages of Pakpor and Phoudindeng in Vientiane Province, this initiative combines hospitality, recreation, cultural activities, and infrastructure with the natural surroundings. Created for Vang Villy Hill Co., Ltd., the plan emphasizes a flexible approach based on circular planning, sustainable mobility, waterway conservation, and long-term ecological resilience. Steven Velegrinis, Gensler's Design Director, noted that the aim is to enhance the site's inherent characteristics instead of imitating external tourism models. The design aligns with Vang Vieng's limestone mountains and agricultural areas, establishing a foundation for the region's future tourism growth.
