Gellért Gombai Captures Son Lóci Between Two Shadows at Lake Balaton Playground

other · 2026-10-17

Freelance photographer Gellért Gombai spends most summers with his wife and two children in Alsóörs, a small holiday village on Lake Balaton — the largest lake in central Europe, often called the Hungarian sea. The family's year is otherwise based in Budapest, Hungary. On the day of the photograph, the family ate hotdogs for lunch before Gombai took the children, Lóci and Janka, to the playground. Lóci, then five years old, was jumping between two shadows — one cast by a changing room, the other by a building's roof. Gombai asked his son to hold still for a few minutes while he framed the shot, and the boy lay on the ground in the position captured. The photographer describes Lóci as a big-hearted little clown. Gombai notes that even while enjoying his holiday, he keeps watching for interesting moments to record. Daily routines for the family include the playground and beach, swimming and beach food. The image is presented as Gombai's best phone picture.
