Gaudí's Crypt: The Hanging Models That Pioneered Parametric Design
Antoni Gaudí's Church of Colònia Güell, known as Gaudí's Crypt, is celebrated as a precursor to parametricism due to its innovative hanging-chain funicular models. Commissioned in 1898 by industrialist Eusebi Güell for workers at his textile factory in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, the church was never completed after Güell's death in 1915. Only the crypt was built, using clinker bricks, basalt, and iron slag. Gaudí developed gravity-assisted hanging models with weighted strings and mirrors to visualize catenary arches and vaults, an early analogue to parametric design. The crypt features slanted columns, hyperbolic paraboloids, and hyperboloids, creating open spaces without buttresses. Academic Mark Burry, a Sagrada Familia worker, calls it Gaudí's potential best building, while biographer Peter Stanford describes it as 'both Neanderthal and a spaceship.' The crypt gained Cultural-Historical Interest status in 1990 and UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2005.
