Gao Zhen Sentenced to Three Years for Satirical Mao Sculptures

On August 25, 2026, the Sanhe City People's Court in Hebei Province sentenced Chinese dissident artist Gao Zhen to three years in prison for defaming revolutionary figures of the CCP, in violation of China's Law on the Protection of Heroes and Martyrs. Gao, aged 70 and a permanent resident of the US, was detained in August 2024 while visiting relatives in China. Alongside his brother Gao Qiang, known as the Gao Brothers, he produces satirical art that critiques Mao and the Cultural Revolution. The prosecution referenced sculptures created 15 to 20 years prior. Gao's family was not permitted to attend the trial. The case has faced significant international backlash. He intends to appeal, with his sentence reflecting two years already served, concluding in August 2027.
