Gang Attack in Haiti Kills at Least 47, Sparks Anger Over Police Failures

According to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti, a gang assault in the hillside town of Kenscoff, which overlooks Port-au-Prince, resulted in at least 47 fatalities and 22 injuries. The incident, which commenced around 10:30 PM local time, sparked outrage among residents, who called for the resignation of the local police chief due to inadequate protection. While the UN indicated that figures might still fluctuate, the Haitian rights organization RNDDH reported between 30 to 40 deaths and 15 to 20 injuries. Kenscoff, strategically located near routes leading to the capital, has endured numerous gang attacks since last year, displacing thousands. Despite foreign efforts to bolster the overwhelmed police, powerful gangs have expanded their control in the region. The Haitian government condemned the "heinous attack" and vowed to enhance security, but locals criticized the police's failure to safeguard victims near the station.
