Gallery 32: Suzanne Jackson's Radical Space for Black Artists in 1960s LA

In 1968, Suzanne Jackson established Gallery 32 within the Granada Buildings, a Spanish-style mixed-use structure in Los Angeles's Westlake neighborhood. Situated in Suite 32, the gallery provided a platform for emerging Black artists often overlooked by mainstream venues such as LACMA. Jackson, whose background includes dance, painting, and theater design, drew inspiration from Charles White’s belief in art as a tool for activism. Notable exhibitions at Gallery 32 included The Sapphire Show in 1970, recognized as the first survey of Black American women artists. The gallery also engaged in political activism, hosting a three-day exhibit of Emory Douglas's artwork to benefit the Black Panther Party's children's breakfast program. Despite challenges like police harassment and bomb threats, Gallery 32 emphasized intellectual discourse and political engagement over commercial success, ultimately closing in 1970 due to financial difficulties. Its influence persists in Los Angeles through organizations like Art + Practice and Del Vaz Projects, which uphold its commitment to community and political awareness.
