Gagosian Paris to Debut Monumental Rudolf Stingel Skyline Painting in Single-Work Show

exhibition · 2026-10-14

A single new painting by Rudolf Stingel will anchor a one-work presentation at Gagosian's rue de Castiglione space in Paris, running from October 22nd, 2026, through January 9th, 2027. The canvas, Untitled, 2026, is executed in oil and enamel and measures 132 by 170 inches (335.3 by 431.8 cm); it depicts the New York City skyline. Photography of the work is credited to Dario Lasagni, courtesy of the artist and Gagosian. The gallery frames the painting as a shift in subject: after a body of self-portraits, Stingel turns his attention to the cityscape, a move the presentation likens to the way Giorgio Morandi and Canaletto treated ordinary, familiar subjects. Born in 1956 in Merano, Italy, and now based in New York, Stingel has worked for more than four decades across abstraction, photorealism and immersive installation, employing silver surfaces, patterned carpets, aluminium, rubber and reflective insulation. Since his late-1980s silver paintings, his practice has emphasized the experience of art alongside the object: his 2013 exhibition at Palazzo Grassi in Venice covered the historic building's walls and floors in patterned carpet, while other installations invited visitors to scratch, draw and leave marks on reflective surfaces. The Paris display is listed among the gallery's exhibitions in the city.
