gabi dao's Shrine and Film at Z33, Hasselt

Gabi dao showcases an exhibition at Z33 in Hasselt that delves into the theme of souls navigating between different realms. The initial gallery displays three small, house-like forms constructed from handcrafted ceramic tiles and wood, drawing inspiration from outdoor shrines found in Vietnam and other parts of East and Southeast Asia. These shrines, embellished with bat motifs, act as protectors during transitions. In the subsequent room, the film "Resurrect Me as a Parasite," a collaboration with Lou Lou Sainsbury, was partially filmed at a grotto in southern France dedicated to Mary Magdalene. This work reexamines concepts of disgust, divinity, and desire through parasitic entities such as vampires and mosquitoes. Dao, originally from Vancouver (unceded xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh territories) and now based in Rotterdam, partners with the Jan Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht.
