Futuro House Reborn: First New Unit in Decades Debuts at Helsinki Design Week
After decades, a new Futuro House designed by Matti Suuronen has been produced using the original moulds. This initiative commenced in 2024 when architect Jan van Dijs discovered that Exel Composites was offering the moulds for sale. With the assistance of Suuronen's family and Finnish manufacturer Ekin Muovi, the moulds were refurbished, leading to a five-month fabrication process at an expense of approximately €450,000. The 21st Futuro House was set up in Kaisaniemi Botanical Gardens for Helsinki Design Week, which runs from 28 August to 6 September 2026, featuring interiors by Marimekko and designs by Vibeke Rohland. Van Dijs intends to create four to six additional Futuros before the moulds are retired. Since 1968, fewer than 100 have been produced, with around 60 still in existence. Suuronen passed away in 2013.
