Fundación Ibercaja Premieres Joan Valent's Sinfonía Goya for 150th Anniversary

other · 2026-09-24

Fundación Ibercaja marks its 150th anniversary with the world premiere of Sinfonía Goya, a symphonic work commissioned from composer Joan Valent. The piece will be performed by the Orquesta Clásica Santa Cecilia, a 110-musician ensemble, under the baton of Grzegorz Nowak, permanent associate conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Zaragoza-born soprano Sabina Puértolas, described as one of Spain's most internationally prominent voices, also takes part. Rather than literal illustration of Goya's paintings, Valent's score proposes a contemporary musical dialogue with the artist, translating his contrasts, his interplay of light and shadow, and his vision of the human condition into sound. The symphony is structured in four movements that traverse deeply Goyaesque terrain, moving from social critique and beauty to intimacy, tragedy and radical darkness. Two performances are scheduled. The first takes place on 2 October 2026 at 19:30 at the Auditorio de Zaragoza Princesa Leonor, with tickets priced from 11 to 16 euros via entradas.ibercaja.es. The second is set for 5 October 2026 at 19:30 at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, with tickets from 15 to 35 euros through the same portal. Further information is available at www.fundacionibercaja.es. The premiere is presented as an exceptional musical event intended to let audiences rediscover Goya through melody and to witness the birth of a piece created to endure.
